Ghost of the AI Empire is a new sci-fi opera from Manchester company Operactive Arts, playing for one night only at the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall on Friday 6 November 2026. Nobody knows how this opera ends. Not even the cast. The audience steers the story live, right up to the final scene. The show senses the audience and responds while it runs, so scenes shift with the mood of the hall. Played to a different audience, it would be a different show. This one happens exactly once. The opera takes Japan's most famous ghost legend, a story of love, ambition and betrayal, and resets it in a near future ruled by an AI empire. It is sung in English, in two parts, The Covenant and Yurei, with music by Ryan Morgan and Atzi Muramatsu and electroacoustic music by Harry O'Brien. It is created and directed by Dr Alexandra Huang-Kokina, co-directed by Nick Bond, and performed by a cast of eight singers with live musicians, only metres from the audience. British Theatre Guide called Operactive's work "the beginning of a new operatic form". For fans of Bandersnatch and immersive theatre.
