The Secret Life of Colour at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

About this event

The Secret Life of Colour comes to Bristol Museum & Art Gallery from 24 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, inviting visitors to explore the fascinating science, history and cultural significance of colour. This colourful exhibition in Bristol brings together art, natural history and science to investigate how colour is created, perceived and used - and how it can influence emotions, cultures and our understanding of the world. Visitors can discover works by internationally renowned artists including Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley, Wassily Kandinsky, Georges Seurat, Peter Blake and Katsushika Hokusai, alongside a fascinating collection of colourful objects and specimens. The exhibition features everything from Delftware ceramics and seabird eggs to carnival costumes, historic poison bottles, stained glass and rare rocks and minerals. It explores colour as much more than decoration, examining its importance in the natural world, art, science and human culture. The Secret Life of Colour is a touring exhibition jointly created by Sheffield Museums Trust, Tullie Museum, Hampshire Cultural Trust, Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery and Bristol Museums.
