Portsmouth100: Albert Road Panorama

About this event

Portsmouth100: Albert Road Panorama is a large‑scale community art exhibition created by Urban Sketchers Portsmouth, a local chapter of the global Urban Sketchers organisation. The project documents the full length of Albert Road in Southsea — one of Portsmouth’s most vibrant, historically layered streets — through a continuous “sketched panorama” produced collaboratively by the group's members. Albert Road is a bustling stretch filled with independent shops, cafés, pubs, venues, and small businesses. Over three dedicated sketching sessions in 2026, Urban Sketchers Portsmouth captured both sides of the road and over 200 buildings, from Victorian façades to modern venues, including “the ‘ghosts’ of former shops, venues, and façades that have disappeared or transformed over the decades” such as the former Gaiety Cinema, now the Co‑Op supermarket. Some artwork will be paired with a short story, anecdote, or historical note collected from traders, residents, and passers‑by. The exhibition will showcase this collective visual testimony of Albert Road’s architectural, cultural, and social history, celebrating the creativity, independence, and diversity that define the area.
